When a woman is pregnant, it is typical to undergo changes in the body. A very common condition that women suffer from is sciatica. A great percentage of pregnant women suffers from sciatica, and if you have the symptoms, it would be best if you act now.

This condition has something to do with the sciatic nerve. The latter is responsible for allowing a person to feel the feet and leg muscles. Where there is an injury or too much pressure in the lower back, the nerve can swell. When the nerve is inflamed, that is the time when you will feel sciatic pain.

Due to chronic or persistent pressure, you will also feel weakness, tingling sensations, and numbness in the leg area. It’s like having your legs sleep, and they are being pricked by needles or pins. Most pregnant women think that the baby is the root cause why there is too much pressure on the sciatic nerve. However, this is a common misconception. The most common cause of sciatic pain is damage to the spine’s disc. Disc injuries are common for women and so this is the reason why a lot of pregnant women suffer from sciatic pain.

According to studies, women will suffer from sciatic pain regardless of their present condition. Even when you’re not pregnant, there is a high chance that you will develop sciatic nerve pain. You should be aware that pelvic pains are different from sciatic pain. You can consult your doctor once you start feeling the disturbing pain.

Here are some of the symptoms that are associated with sciatic pain:

  • The legs or foot seem to be pricked with needles or pins.
  • Burning or shooting pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs
  • Pain at the pelvis or lower back, at times extending to the feet
  • Feet or leg numbness

Sciatic pains during pregnancy will soon disappear, and you don’t need any treatment. It is common to suffer from the symptoms of sciatica for about one and a half months or longer. A physical therapist may be able to help you in relieving the symptoms. Manual therapies are usually advised to pregnant women to get rid of the discomfort and pressure on the sciatic nerve.

There are exercising that you can practice strengthening your back and abdominal muscles. You can also check with a chiropractor, but you have to make sure that the medical professional is working with pregnant women.

Massage therapy is also good to relieve the symptoms and inflammation but since you’re pregnant, you will have to talk to the therapist about your current condition. The treatment options for pregnant women are limited because the baby’s safety will always come first.  You can start by introducing changes or corrections in your posture. A good posture will help you in reducing the stress on the sciatic nerves.

Pregnant women don’t want to encounter any stress, and if you’re suffering from sciatica, you should visit your doctor right away.
