Sciatica may occur due to entrapping of the sciatic nerve by a tight piriformis muscle. Excessive pressure from a tight piriformis muscle doesn’t damage the sciatic nerve; it only compresses it, causing stinging pain. The pelvises of people suffering from sciatica sometimes get distorted; with one side of the hip being higher and more forward compared to the other side. This postural distortion puts the piriformis muscle in a shortened position, making it tighter.

It is very common for women to complain about sciatica pain during pregnancy.
